Those of us who are committed to our personal and professional growth are fortunate. We recognize that in order to succeed, we need to take action in our lives and direct the course of our own destiny.
And, so, we read books, listen to tapes, attend seminars and otherwise tap into the wisdom of those who have already blazed the trail that will lead us to our goals.
ThatÕs why many of us are excited and motivated in the moment -- during and right after the seminar or workshop. WeÕre ready to kick butt and finally accomplish the things that have so far eluded us in our quest to fulfill the purpose of our lives and to acquire the personal and financial freedom we know we deserve.
However, because the beliefs and behaviors we bring to our challenge have been ingrained in us over years of living our lives, it takes an extraordinary event or supreme effort to overcome the gravity of this life experience that will lead to lasting results.
As so often happens, a short time after reading the book, listening to the tape or taking the course, we fall back to earth and find ourselves caught up in the same patterns as before. Even worse, we kick our own butt for not having the gumption or intelligence -- or whatever self-defeating language we use to chastise our self -- to put into practice what we learned and go on to conquer the world.
The good news is that this is normal. We are human after all and these ingrained ways of dealing with the problems and issues of our lives are deep and not easily erased over a day or a weekend.
In fact, it takes a different approach to transform the moment into momentum.
In my work with high-achievers, I have found that small, continual episodes of regular practice are more effective in generating lasting results than one large burst of effort. Ultimately, these small steps generate greater and greater momentum that ultimately propels us to the next level. WhatÕs more, this occurs with less stress and more enjoyment than if we had exerted ourselves to blast through the impediment.
